What Makes KPSquared Different?

KPSquared Inc. is leading the advancement of innovative, family-centric child care across Alberta. We are focused on building infrastructure that responds to the increasing demands placed on families and the labour force.

Our 24-hour model is built for alignment. It integrates health care, education, and inclusive care to support the entire family unit, with flexibility designed for parents working outside standard hours—particularly in industries like oil and gas, health care, and hospitality. Far beyond basic childcare standards, our centres provide high-quality, connection-based environments that foster child development and help relieve the pressures parents face in balancing work and caregiving.

Family-centric care means designing systems that consider the needs of everyone responsible for a child’s wellbeing. It ensures that care aligns with work schedules, reduces parental stress, and strengthens family systems—economically, emotionally, and at the level of daily fundamentals.

  • OUR MISSION

To redefine child care through innovation, inclusion, and flexibility. We provide 24-hour, evidence-based programs that empower families to thrive, meeting them where they are, celebrating every child’s individuality, and building meaningful community connections that support families through every season of life, while fostering trust, belonging, and growth for all children and caregivers.

  • OUR VISION

A future where every family regardless of schedule, circumstance, or ability has access to high-quality, inclusive, and flexible early learning that strengthens communities, uplifts families, and nurtures each child to grow with confidence, curiosity, and the opportunity to reach their fullest potential, guided by compassionate educators who inspire lifelong learning and connection for generations to come.

Our Story

KPSquared was built from lived experience and a refusal to accept limitation.

At just sixteen, Kyla Penner became a mother, an experience that shaped her understanding of responsibility, resilience, and the realities working families face. Years later, while building a successful career in Alberta’s oil sands, she was forced to forfeit that path when no licensed child care existed outside standard weekday hours. Nothing past six, no weekend options, and no flexibility for shift-working parents.

When the system failed to adapt, Kyla did. She built what didn’t exist, a 24-hour model of care operating when it wasn’t yet legislated to do so. The government responded with a lawsuit. Kyla responded with conviction. What began as resistance turned into reform, as she pushed forward, the lawsuit folded and her team was given the opportunity to co-author the legislation that made 24-hour child care possible in Alberta.

During those early years, Kyla met Kate Harbin, a fellow oil-sands professional who first enrolled her daughter in Kyla’s private care program. The two immediately recognized a shared belief that families deserved better systems of support, ones built with flexibility, integrity, and real understanding of what working parents face.Their partnership became the foundation for what would grow into KPSquared Innovative Childcare, a province-wide network that now includes five licensed centres, a dayhome agency, and a sixth 24-hour location in development.

Today, KPSquared is changing the face of child care through a new standard, family-centric care. We design environments that support children, empower parents, and strengthen the economic and emotional foundations of entire communities.

Now supporting over 750 families across Alberta, what began as one mother’s solution to an impossible choice has evolved into a movement of reform, resilience, and legacy, reshaping how Alberta defines care for generations to come
