FAQs

A preschool classroom with children and teachers engaging in activities on a colorful alphabet-themed rug, with bookshelves, toys, and educational decorations in the background.

This section is designed to help you navigate day-to-day life at KP² with ease. From what to pack to how to communicate with educators, you’ll find everything you need to set your family up for success. If something isn’t covered here, please don’t hesitate to reach out, we’re always happy to help.

  • Welcome! The best way to prepare is to download the Brightwheel app, fill out all your child’s information and read through and sign off on the parent handbook. We are available to answer your questions (nothing is too small or too silly) and want to work with you to ensure a positive and successful transition into care.

  • We are so glad you are here and hope you can see and feel the KP²  difference through your  interactions with us.

We value the whole family unit and our team strives to be the support system that your family deserves. KP²  is rooted in empathy, compassion, connection and, most of all, love.

Our 24 hour facility is an open concept environment that allows for more open ended play experiences. Children at KP have multiple experiences moving through our space each day.

  • Your child should come into our care wearing comfortable play clothes that may get dirty.

Each day, parents are required to bring a small bag or backpack that includes

    • a change of clothes (each piece labelled)

    • indoor shoes (labelled)

    • a water bottle (labelled)

    • a family photo (protected inside a zip lock bag)

    • suitable outdoor clothing for all weather conditions

    • packed lunch (labelled) *no nuts or shellfish

    • one small comfort item such as a small blanket or teddy (labelled)

DO NOT bring toys, valuables, tablets or phones

    • St. Pauls - because this is a school setting, indoor shoes may stay as well as outdoor clothes, all children have a labelled hook.

    • 24 hour location - no personal belongings left at the facility with the exception of diapers and wipes

For overnight care, children may bring additional comforting and grooming items including pajamas, hairbrush, toothbrush, blankets, teddy’s, etc. Each child will have their own room and space overnight to store their belongings safely.

  • Water bottles are essential. You may need special clothing depending on the activity. Staff will reach out to families and give a list of required items for the field trip, please check Brightwheel for these details.

  • We get it, many of us are parents too, and we understand why it feels easier to leave the house by saying yes when your child wants to bring their soft bedding and their favourite toys. Although avoiding their discomfort in these moments may seem like the goal, preparing them for care is ultimately what we encourage you to focus on. Increase support through any difficult moments by taking an extra 5 minutes to connect during this transition. As educators, we want you to know these extra items can’t be allowed into the centre because they are distracting for everyone and can hinder your child's ability to show interest and engage with the play that we have carefully set up for them. Welcoming them into their day is our first priority and when your child is emotionally regulated (calm and alert), they will get the most out of the relationships and experiences available to them.

If you need to, please say goodbye to extra bedding and toys in the car and choose 1 small comfort item to be with your child.

  • Send us a message on Brightwheel. We will take a look for it and notify you.

24 hr location - during the evening, our nightshift staff will search for the item while cleaning and prepping the centre for the following day. If a missing item is found, it will be placed on the front desk and families will be notified first thing in the morning.

St.Pauls - sometimes it gets left or lost from the transition from the school classroom to the daycare classroom, so our staff will also check the school’s lost and found.

  • The best way to support your child’s time in childcare is to label all belongings and communicate openly with us. We value our partnership and ask for transparency if/when there is information that could be shared that would impact your child.

  • Brightwheel is our primary space for communication. Please note there are 2 different chat features:

Use admin chat for short notice scheduling, confidential or sensitive information

Use main chatfor late or early drop off/pick up notice, general check ins, missing items

  • We created this handout to support you with drop off routines. Separating from your child is hard! You are not alone.

If you try these suggestions and still find drop off to be a stressful experience, feel free to contact us. We are always happy to work with you. We can also connect you with our KP² parent coach who consults with us on a regular basis.

  • The first thing to note is that anxious feelings are a normal part of our human experience and don’t need to be feared or avoided. Anxiety is best managed with added support and through building trust with a loving caregiver. Here are some questions to reflect on:

    • Is my energy contributing to the anxiety or neutralizing it?

    • Have I tried supporting my child with an earlier bedtime?

    • Is my child eating and eliminating well?

    • Is there an opportunity to improve nutrition at home?

    • Are we connecting as a family or 1:1 or have things been extra busy lately?

If you try these suggestions and still find your child’s anxiety to be overwhelming, feel free to contact us. We are always happy to work with you. We can also connect you with our KP²  parent coach who consults with us on a regular basis.

  • When your child gets picked up with stains on their clothes, this is a sign of a great day and something to celebrate! We encourage children in care to participate actively in their play which includes water, sand, paint etc.

You can support this by not sending your child in special or expensive clothing. Worrying about clothing or stress about getting dirty should not be on a child’s mind! And it should never be the first thing they hear at pick up.

As a child-led, inquiry based program, we spend time outside when we can. Dirt happens! We welcome all opportunities for the child to explore their environment fully.

  • All minor or serious injuries are always reported to parents. Occasionally, but not often, children will have a bruise or a scratch from their play. This is never due to lack of supervision. If something shows up in the evening, please ask us about this.

Please refer to the parent handbook to see our policy for reporting, documenting and notifying parents of incidents that may require treatment or follow-up.

  • Similar to the drop off routine, your pick up routine is an opportunity to connect and build secure attachment with your child. You may wish to have a pick up routine with your child which welcomes them back into your loving arms. The moment when you reconnect with your child should focus on loving touch and eye contact. We strongly encourage you to not enter the building on your phone; your child misses you and will benefit from your full attention. Focus on your child during this time instead of communicating with the educator. If there is anything you need to know about the day, we will have notified you in advance on Brightwheel or by phone. There may be times we need to discuss behaviour or your child's progress, but only positive comments will be made in front of the child. If we need to discuss something last minute with you, we will do so before calling your child up.

It can be helpful to spend a minute in the car before picking up your child to view any photos on Brightwheel so you have a sense of their day and what questions to ask them.

Before entering the building, take a breath and help yourself “switch gears”. This may be 30 seconds that goes a long way in offering your child quality presence.
